Last night, the sixth annual Canadian Screen Awards took place at the Sony Centre in Toronto and recognized the best in local talent in film, television and media. Real Style was reporting live from the red carpet, and also present for the show which followed. Co-hosted by Canadian actors and comedians Emma Hunter and Jonny Harris, this year’s CSAs also honoured famed Toronto author Margaret Atwood for her special achievements. Other famous Canadians who were featured included Rick Mercer of the Rick Mercer Report and legendary journalist Peter Mansbridge.

Of course, the winners on the CSA stage ranged from comedic actors to directors. Korean Canadian actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee won for his portrayal of strict patriarch Mr. Kim on CBC sitcom Kim’s Convenience, which also won for Best Comedy Series. Director Aisling Walsh’s film Maudie cleaned house with seven Canadian Screen Awards, which included Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Meanwhile, star Sally Hawkins was awarded Best Actress for her role as titular character, Nova Scotia artist Maude Lewis.

Directed by Nora Twomey and produced by Angelina Jolie, animated film The Breadwinner also won a CSA for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film tells the story of Parvana (voiced by Saara Chaudry), a young girl in Afghanistan who disguises herself as a boy to work and support her family. Once again, Regina-born Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany was awarded Best Lead Actress in a Drama for her role on the hit sci fi show.

Overall, this year’s Canadian Screen Awards were an evening of empowerment, with diverse stars, emerging stars and seasoned professionals all being recognized on the stage. However, the evening also carried a meaningful and somber message, with Canada’s #AfterMeToo movement being acknowledged. The initiative, founded by actress Mia Kirshner, producer Aisling Chin-Yee and actress Freya Ravensbergen, aims to assist sexual violence support services in Canada.
