If you thought the Fast Furious series was coming to an end, you’d be sadly mistaken. The hit movie franchise is not only making more sequels, and a spin-off, but now they are heading to Netflix as well as an animated series.
Yesterday DreamWorks Animation and Netflix gave a sneak peak at the new animated series based on the live-action films. The series is executive produced by the producers of the movies, Vin Diesel, Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan, and it will follow the story of a teenager named Tony Toretto. He’s the cousin of Dom (Vin Diesel’s character in the films), and is recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league that is really just a front of a criminal organization that wants to take over the world.
Melissa Cobb, Netflix’s VP of Kids and Family, said in a statement that “The Fast Furious franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can’t wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humor and global appeal of the feature films.”
Universal studios of course really doesn’t want the Fast Furious series to end, after all it has become the studio’s most-profitable and longest-running franchise. Over the course of eight films the series has raked in over $5 billion world-wide. The latest film in the franchise, last year’s The Fate of the Furious, currently holds the record for the biggest global opening ever. The ninth film is set to hit theatres next year, with two more sequels coming out in 2020 and 2021.
No release date was given with the announcement, so we will have to keep our eyes peeled for that information when it is available.
