Most of us know RED as the maker of high-end digital video cameras, but the company is looking to get into mobile. It announced the RED Hydrogen One a few months ago, and in true RED fashion, the price was one of the few things we knew about it. The mysterious Android smartphone will retail for $1,195 when it comes out in the not-too-distant future. To justify that price, RED claimed the phone would come with a “holographic display.” We’ve now got a better idea what that means: Think “Star Wars.”

RED has announced that its holographic display comes from a partnership with Leia Inc, which is named after Princess Leia from the Star Wars films. The company’s lightfield holographic display technology is supposed to be reminiscent of the 3D hologram of Leia projected by R2-D2 in the original 1977 movie. We have to take Leia Inc at its word here — videos of the company’s technology don’t retain the same 3D effect when filmed and relayed to your eyes over the internet. The demo video below might be a close approximation, or it could be a flight of fancy.

According to Leia, its holographic display technology is based on diffraction within a conventional LCD. Nanostructures in the display alter the behavior of the backlight, giving the image the appearance of depth. This apparently doesn’t have negative impacts on the battery life, thickness, or display quality for normal images. With holographic content, you could tilt and rotate the screen to view 3D objects from different angles. Leia’s screens will even support interaction with objects “above” the display, thanks to a partnership with Synaptics. It’s unclear how that will work, but it sounds neat.

Even if the technology is genuinely impressive in real life, it’s going to come down to content. There aren’t exactly a lot of holographic videos and games floating around online. RED does have a lot of experience with video, so perhaps it will be creating content for the Hydrogen One on a regular basis. RED says the device will feature movies, mobile gaming, and mixed reality experiences.

No one has seen a fully functional version of the Hydrogen One yet, so you’ve still got time to save up $1,200 for the phone. A few months ago that would have seemed crazy, but the Note 8 is almost $1,000, and it doesn’t have a holographic display. RED says the Hydrogen One will be out in the first half of 2018.
