And the awards season has officially arrived. This morning the nominations for the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards were released, and the speculations on who deserves to be there (and who was snubbed) has begun.

Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water turned heads during its premiere at TIFF earlier this year, and after leading the Golden Globes nominations with seven, it appears to be well on its way to earning several statues over the course of awards season. Hot on the monster movie / love story’s heels are Steven Spielberg’s latest film the Post (which isn’t due to hit theatres until just before Christmas) and this year’s indie favourite Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

The Best Picture Drama Category has Call Me by Your Name, Dunkirk, The Post, The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, going up against each other, while in the always controversial Best Picture Comedy or Musical category has The Disaster Artist,  Get Out,  The Greatest Showman, I, Tonya and Lady Bird vying for the statue.

On the television side of things, it is  HBO’s Big Little Lies that grabbed the most nominations with six. The hit series was recently renewed for season two, which wasn’t surprising considering how successful it was earlier in the year. FX’s Feud: Bette and Joan was next with four.

Big Little Lies is competing in the Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television against Fargo, Feud: Bette and Joan, The Sinner and Top of the Lake: China Girl. The Best Comedy on TV will be one of Black-ish,  The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Master of None, SMILF or Will Grace, while the best Dram will be either The Crown, Game of Thrones, The Handmaid’s Tale, Stranger Things or This is Us.
