Winter Heating Tips

Feeling the chill this winter? Many parts of the USA and Canada just can’t get warm enough! With the frigid temps come higher electric consumption, due to the constant heating in our homes and offices. While investing in long-term, energy-efficient solutions, such as solar and geothermal power, are some of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint and save money, here are a few quick fixes (that won’t cost you a penny) that you can tackle today to get you through the shiver smack down.

1. Close the air vents in rooms you don’t use.

Do you have a guest room, den, bathroom, or office that rarely sees visitors? Close the vents and shut the doors to those spaces and redirect all the heat your system is producing into the rooms that have more traffic.

2. Open south, close north.

During winter months, open the drapes, curtains and blinds that cover any south facing windows to let additional heat and warmth fill your rooms. Keep all other windows covered with curtains or drapes. Any non-south-facing window receives only a few hours of sunlight a day, and if left uncovered, these windows provide an exit for heat through the thin glass and the breaks in the window casing.

3. Give drafts the cold shoulder.

Check for sneaky, shiver-inducing air creeping in under doors, around windows, through attic doors, and even through electrical outlets. By eliminating these drafts, you’ll not only stay warmer but you could also save nearly 10 percent on your total energy bill. Caulk, spray foam, weather stripping and a few rolled up blankets can help end the free breezes through your home.

4. Move your furniture.

If your heating comes through vents in the floor or you’re using a radiator or space heater, make sure your furniture and rugs aren’t blocking that precious warmth.  Move anything that might obstruct the air from your heat source.

5. Embrace the Hygge.

The Danish art of cozy living – hygge (pronounced HOO-gah) – is sweeping the Internet and may be the best (and most fun) way to stay warm this winter. Become a hygge pro without spending money or increasing the size of your carbon footprint! Turn down your thermostat a few degrees, fill your house with glowing candlelight, prepare some yummy, warm comfort foods, tuck into a pair of snuggly socks and cozy up under a few warm blankets next to your favorite cuddle buddy. And voila – you’ve got the hygge skills mastered!
